BIG FIVE History

Tracking and hunting Africa’s five most dangerous animals with a weapon on foot – this was, in colonial times, proudly called a Big Five Safari. Lion and Leopard, Elephant, African Buffalo and Rhino have been hunted for their fur, tusk, horn and skull and served as hunting trophy.

The “Big Five Safari” today

Nowadays the Big Five are protected species in national parks, because they are the stars of every “Big Five Safari” in Africa. In fact, the hunters are now tourists. Consequently, the new trophies are the countless impressive photos they take home.

Where can you observe the Big Five?

Kenya, Masai Mara National Park,  Tanzania, Ngorongoro Crater, Serengeti National Park, Rwanda, Akagera National Park

WHY AND HOW DID YOU BECOME A SAFARI GUIDE?

I grew up in Italy where I spent most of my spare time in horse riding and camping.

I was a traveler for passion and finally I came to Kenya where I was filled with enthusiasm for the bush and I started going on safari until I decided to move to Kenya in 1998.

From then on I started studying the animals and nature of Kenya, and in the meantime I was running a small mobile camp, and then finally when I got my KPSGA (Kenya Professional Safari Guide Association) certifications I started my own safari firm.

WHAT MAKES A GOOD BIRDING SAFARIS GUIDE IN YOUR OPINION?

A safari guide is somebody that can be a sort of a “translator” for the guests of nature’s language.

As a guide I would like to transmit to my guests not only notions about the bush but also the feelings that the bush gives, and I want to transmit interest not only in big five but also in plants and all the connections between the different species.

My special skills

I don’t just spot animals in the distance with binoculars. I also learned to read and identify almost all of the wildlife trails in the Serengeti National Park. The discovery is often very close and not far away!

Highlights

Animal migration in Serengeti and in the Masai Mara.  Experience a unique natural spectacle that can hardly be put into words: Millions of wildebeest, zebras and gazelles roam the Serengeti and the Masai Mara every year in a steady, tireless hike, following the rain, in search of water and fresh grass

Lake Victoria, Lake Nakuru, Ngorongoro Crater and Amboseli National Park
Explore Lake Victoria by boat, along the East African Rift Valley you will be amazed at the grandiose landscapes that nature has created over millions of years: steep cliffs, volcanic craters and deep lakes, the banks of which are lined with thousands of flamingos. With a bit of luck you will spot rare rhinos at Lake Nakuru and in the huge Ngorongoro Crater. Elephants present themselves in Amboseli National Park against the backdrop of snow-capped Kilimanjaro.

Best travel time

From November to February temperatures are pleasantly warm in East Africa. In Kenya’s temperate climate, you can travel almost all year round and go on safari in the numerous national parks and protected reserves. Only in April and May there are temporary restrictions due to the rainy season.

However, this “green season” also has its charms: few tourists, clear, dust-free air, cheap flight and accommodation prices, lush, green vegetation and happy animals. For this reason, we recommend traveling during or after the rainy season and offer you appropriate dates. Between August and October you can experience the spectacular large animal migration and dramatic river crossings in the Masai Mara.
